Details:

The pencil Mueller super brilliant is scarce, but come up for offer time to time on. With many vintage instruments the case is long gone. This 280N was c. Conn Connstellation series.

This would simply be an enhancement to the action of tone hole keys. This would be an offer for serious clarinet collectors first year issue 1952 c. 9 all original with all original accessories. Under cutting of tone holes is found on all of today's smaller bore modern clarinets.

Conn came up with a new material for the keys called Duroc's. Endorsement ads are from big band musicians artie shaw johnny mince and the 3rd ad is a very rare ad of Julliard clarinet professor Arthur Christmas. The clarinet plays from top to bottom and 100 playable.

While the 38n Connstellation is a solid built instrument, it is a wood en version of the plastic Conn 16 model. Conn decided to add the number to the 28, resulting in the model number 280N for this Connstellation series clarinet. Both latches pop up with the spring action.

The leather is in good condition with a couple of surface tears, but still good. Now the Conn company is Conn Delmer company, which now owns Leblanc. It is like comparing a buffet pre r13 bore design to a buffet r 13. Typically information found on the internet is by players persons who present their theory about this clarinet, but not fact.

Leblanc Pete fountain model's come up from time to time as well as Boise hawkers imperial. This is considered a minor job that a repair technician can perform for an average fee of 50 to the reversed taper design of the 280N has more resistance which produces a darker more direct powerful sound. I purchased it from an estate sale in Philadelphia, pa almost 20 years ago. The solid brass fixtures are in good condition such as the brass medallion on the top lid.

The latches work perfectly, which still lock and the spring action works. Traditional features carried over from the 444n are the adjustable pivot screw that have a locking set screw. Leblanc did not under cut tone holes on the original Leblanc dynamic and Leblanc Pete fountain series. You an find Delmer centered tone clarinets all day long available for sale here on.

Keep in mind this is the original case. Conn 444n clarinet.

Also the trill keys have a straight design and each trill key is mounted with it's own post screw similar to older Leblanc, newer Leblanc legacy and nobler clarinets and modern backing clarinets. This 280N big bore clarinet has a reverse taper or reversed conical bore design.

Resulting in more accurate intonation, more positive response and easier tone production. No type of silver cleaner or metal polishing solution is needed. Case is somewhat like the Delmer Paris chesterfield cases of the 1950s. The r 13 poly cylindrical bore design is superior in sound and intonation to pre r13 model's.

This is a big bore clarinet with undercut tone holes. The 280N bell is different from the 444n. Conn 280N clarinets are not comparable to the 1960s Conn 38n Connstellation clarinet. This clarinet would be a great candidate for a museum or large collection of rare and hard to find clarinets.

The green leaf family were getting up and age and eventually sold the Conn company to a music company conglomerate in the late 1950s. This barrel is different from the typical k barrel used on the Conn 444n 424n model's. It differs from the 444n bell. Sorry, but there are no keys with this case.

It has a reduced bore size measuring 14. It is typically a standard feature used by backing, buffet, Leblanc, Louis Ross, peter Eaton, Delmer Paris, Delmer USA, Jupiter, Yamaha other major brands. All joints both original barrels, upper lower joint original bell were made from beautiful tight grain grenadilla wood original varnish job intact under cut tone holes is very rare on big bore clarinets.

I've tried to include all information available for a potential buyer to make a sound decision.

Then and now usually come with two barrels. This is solid proof memorialized on paper. All of the first Connstellation series instruments 28 b trumpet, 28 a coronet, 28 trombone, 28 french horn and the rare 28 m alto saxophone were all limited production model numbers. They typically are lost or not reinstalled my lazy repair techs over the years.

Conn brash medallion on the top lid. Peter Eaton of England elite model is currently the only major maker of big bore clarinets with under cut tone holes. The 280N is more flexible and notes are more responsive. The prefix number 28 represented the first Connstellation series instrument.

Since this model number was already used, c. Conn craftsmen to under the tone hole to be more precise, accurate, and consistent manner.

Inserts were made of a special ebonies composition which were machined to a finer, more precise edge that typical integral tone holes.

The 2nd barrel is the t2 however, I never replaced any springs. These tone hole inserts were guaranteed not to crack like regular wood tone holes which crack and or wear down after years of use. The name Connstellation was reserved for top of the line c.

Original matching top and bottom joints, original bell, both original barrels, original Conn steelay mouthpiece, original ligature cap, and the original Connstellation series case with the choice of the artists medallion. This was done to ensure any future lack in quality of instruments would not be tied back the c. Features of the c.

As you can see this is a very interesting clarinet. These magazine ads would look framed in your home or office. The thicker wood and slightly smaller also adds the a darker wood y tonal quality which enhances the more focused sound.

The 280N delivers a more bold focused sound that is still jazzy, yet more refined. It is not the typical cylindrical bore design found on the Delmer centered tone, Conn 444n, and Leblanc dynamic series. Mounting of trill keys on individual post ensures even pad wear and positive direct coverage of tone holes.

G this is extremely rare to have the very tiny locking screws all in tact. It was not until the 1990that Leblanc under cut tones holes on the now discontinued Leblanc big bore jazz big easy model. Conn 280N design.

Keep in mind, as a collector I did not change anything since all aspects are functional.

It does not tarnish and a simple rubbing with a polishing cloth brings the shine back. Under cut tone holes makes the clarinet more responsive, helps assures balanced resonance of all notes in the scale, improves intonation, and provides more flexibility for the player. Delmer Paris used bigger diameter tone holes to try to improve air flow for responsiveness.

The 1st barrel is the l barrel measuring 66. Conn golden era the only clarinet fully endorsed by artie shaw this is truly one of the rarest clarinets ever maidenly produced from 1952 through mid 1954 a collector's dream. This clarinet was ahead of it's time with advanced features used on today's clarinets.

With this you do not have to the internet to research information that could be incorrect. The 280N featured under cut tone holes. 00mm which is the main barrel. Many times with typical wood en integral tone holes, they have to be resurfaced within a restoration overhaul.

Conn 444n bore design to the c. Re designed barrels and bell.

All of the first run series Connstellation instruments brass wind wood wind came in a two tone tan brown case with the c. The clarinet has it's original Connstellation series case. This is vastly significant to other big bore cylindrical clarinet.

Up for offer is very rare c. Great addition for a museum or major collection. All original keys are in very good condition. It so happened that there was a 28n clarinet from the mid with a revered taper design the bore is larger at the top of a section and tapers to a smaller diameter.

Conn Ltd music company. I have a 444n clarinet that i've test played against this 280N. Most of the information is presented by persons who have never seen nor touched this model clarinet. Conn clarinet end of the c.

The same goes for other big bore clarinet such as the Conn 444n, Delmer Paris balanced tone BTU, and standard Delmer Paris series 9 clarinets.rights were not sold in respect to the founder Charles g.

With the use of tone hole inserts, c. Recognizing it was a rare low production clarinet that was lightly played I simply performed a cleaning, conditioned the bore with bore oil, replaced the corks, recently installed all new pads for this sale.

This clarinet has all the locking set screws. But most importantly it is an advanced 'big bore clarinet. This design helps facilitate a more focused darker sound and the last part of this clarinet to ensure a non spreading tone. This controls air flow better.

This is a rare find and a great package deal. Conn model's this 280N model is 99.

The only thing missing is the key for the case. The new l barrel is also reverse taper design which improves response and intonation. It serves as a tuning barrel I can only assume the stands for tuning 2 means 2nd barrel this barrel has a classic cylindrical bore design used on your typical barrel. Conn clarinets to compete with buffet, Delmer, Leblanc.

Re designed keys. One company makes them for Conn instruments, but the ones they have for the clarinets are not the correct size.

The 280N has precision threaded tone hole inserts. This design was used by Hans morning on customized buffet r 13s, standard with the Delmer Paris 10g, and now used on buffet chad ash and Morrow backing fanboy mobs barrels. The wood is absolutely stunning and virtually flawless. Two barrels came standard with this clarinet.

This clarinet amazed esteemed clarinet players from all genres of music. Some of the hardware is solid brass and some brass plated which have plating loss. The 280N bell is thicker and a slightly smaller diameter. The interior of the case is in excellent condition.

The exterior I would say is in good to fair condition considering it's age. As a bonus I have included are 3 original magazine ads from they have the post pinned design which is found on buffet r 13 model's. Conn Connstellation 280N clarinet.

These are not copies, they actually came from 1952 and 1953 magazines. Keep in mind high quality blued steel needle springs should be installed rather than typical wire springs from the aspect as an avid collector, you would be getting a rare clarinet that fully intact and untouched with no after production changes other than the tenon corks and pads. Many of the keys are have engraved on the underside. 1950s Delmer Paris and Leblanc did not undercut tone holes of their big bore clarinets.

It is vastly different from the c. The 38n has a standard cylindrical bore design with no under cut tone holes. This clarinet is from my personal collection.

Somewhat more advanced than other clarinets from it's era such as the Delmer centered tone, Delmer balanced tone, Leblanc dynamic series, and Boise hawks imperial this material appears to be a nickel chromium alloy. I have always keep this clarinet in our piano room music room which has a humidifier along with my collection of clarinets oboes the clarinet is in superb condition for it's age, 63 years old.

This is why you cannot equate the c. From jazz to Julliard wow.

Matching serial numbers on upper and lower joints are b280nb347158l, dates to production year only the Conn name was sold company. As a bonus I have included are 3 original magazine ads from down beat magazine with endorsements by artie shaw, johnny mince, and a super rare ad endorsement by Julliard professor Arthur. All springs work, but the 2 springs operating the bridge keys on the upper joint, and the one spring operating the tone hole keys on the lover joint are a little weak. The bell was re designed as well.

The reversed taper of this 280N produced a more defined non spreading tone. Both came from down beat magazine. It's so hard to find and replacement parts would be impossible.

This Duroc's material I noticed is much stronger than silver plated keys or German silver aka nickel silver keys. These locking screws are hard to find. Conn case has two slots for both barrels.

Christmas of the information on the internet about this 280N clarinet is incorrect. However, Conn continued the use of the brass inlay on the bell like the 444n.

1960s and forward instruments were very popular among students due to their durability. This is a note to the potential buyer that 3 springs work, but would benefit if the top tone hole springs were replaced.

The 1950s marked the end of the c. If you break or loose any of the 280N keys, you probably will never find a replacement. All 3 ads have detailed information about the new design features of the 280N Connstellation. This is another reason why I never played this clarinet on a regular basis.

The 280N's bell is thicker and has a smaller flare. All trill key flat springs are strong, two top Sharp keys are fine, the top joints right side key spring and cleft side needle spring is strong. The spatula keys on the lower joint were re designed too.

I can tell if these keys were ever disfigured or bent, it would be exceptionally harder to re them.
